Photo spots in Krems and the Wachau
Not a ranking of the prettiest views, but a practical list: which place has the best light and when, how you get there, and what to do if it rains.
The best spot is the one you don't have to travel to
The most common planning mistake for couple shoots: a beautiful place 30 minutes' drive away. There and back is an hour gone - time missing from your guests and your celebration. A good spot within walking distance almost always beats a perfect spot with a drive. That's why every entry here states how you realistically get there.
Six places that reliably work
Krems old town & rectory
Narrow lanes, warm natural stone and the historic rectory right next to the registry office. Very different backdrops in a tiny area - the most efficient spot in town.
- Best light
- Morning and late afternoon sun; at midday the sun sits too high for the lanes.
- Access
- Walking distance from the Krems registry office, no drive needed.
- If it rains
- Arcades and doorways along Obere Landstraße offer covered settings.
Loess terraces, Rohrendorf
Vineyards with a wide view across the Kremstal. The light in the last hour before sunset is the warmest in the whole region - my default for couple shoots.
- Best light
- Golden hour, the last 60–90 minutes before sunset.
- Access
- Five minutes' drive from Krems; the tracks are walkable in sturdy shoes - tricky in heels.
- If it rains
- Nearby press houses and cellar lanes offer covered alternatives with the same character.
Dürnstein & town wall
The blue church tower above the Danube is the best-known view in the Wachau. Which is exactly why it's full of people in summer.
- Best light
- Early morning or golden hour - in between it's crowded with tourists.
- Access
- 20–25 minutes' drive from Krems, more like 35 in summer. Parking is tight, so plan a buffer.
- If it rains
- The cellar lanes and archways in the village centre work in bad weather too.
Danube bank at Krems & Stein
Wide water, riverside paths and plenty of sky. Good for calm, open images as a contrast to the tight old-town settings.
- Best light
- Evening light; backlight across the water is especially atmospheric.
- Access
- A short drive or a longer walk from the old town.
- If it rains
- Almost no shelter - in rain we're better off moving into the old town.
Winery venues in the Kremstal
Courtyards, barrel cellars and terraces overlooking the vines. The advantage: celebration, ceremony and couple shoot all in one place, with no travel time.
- Best light
- Usable all day; cellars are independent of weather and time.
- Access
- On site at the venue - no time lost.
- If it rains
- The best rain plan there is: cellars and covered courtyards are part of the setting, not a substitute.
Mühlbach am Manhartsberg
Away from the Wachau tourist routes, quiet and green. If you want a village wedding without an audience, conditions here are relaxed.
- Best light
- Afternoon and evening light.
- Access
- Around 30 minutes' drive from Krems.
- If it rains
- The village centre and farmyards offer covered options.
Aerial footage in the Wachau - what's permitted
The Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and parts of the region are subject to conservation and airspace restrictions. I fly EU-certified and insured and clear permission for your venue in advance. Where flying isn't allowed, I say so beforehand - rather than trying on the wedding day and failing.
